"The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will." - Vince Lombardi
It is quite seldom that one hears a person claim they succeeded because he/she is smarter or stronger than others. In fact, many successful people discount those characteristics. I have watched a lot of sports for an 18-year old individual. There have been many times that I have seen hard work and determination overcome boundaries of athleticism.
When I was young, I stumbled across this quote from Hall of Fame football coach Vince Lombardi. I have applied this idea to everything I have done since then. I recognize that throughout my life I will constantly cross paths with people that are more talented in certain areas than I. I know that I cannot rely on raw skills, but instead I must work hard at whatever I do. Through my time at AMES, I have put in the effort to do my best in studies, athletics, and anything else I endeavored.
Sometime in the future, when I am reflecting on what I have done and how it has led to me to the position I am in, I hope I can look back with a smile. I want to remember, not the talents that Michael Nakamura had or the awards he won or anything beyond the basics; I want to look back and know that Michael Nakamura was a nice person, and he wasn’t the strongest; he wasn’t the smartest; but he put 100% into everything he set his mind towards.
