DRSL: Critical Thinking Freshman Year
This mini essay represents critical thinking because I took what I knew about writing body paragraphs and an introduction and used it to write about the prompt. I also used what I learned about the book and how Ancient Greeks viewed their heroes to find good evidence to back up my claim and write a good warrant in each paragraph to back up my evidence. I also had to know what a body paragraph included because I was given this assignment as a test in class. The assignment combined many writing fundamentals that I had learned to build a more complete writing ability for essays.

As a way to prepare for the AP European test, I created an outline of my textbook as I would read the information. I used my outline as a way to break down important information and organize it in a way that would help me study. I figured out while going through the text that making the outline itself was just as helpful as reviewing it after. I worked on this project continuously throughout the second semester to prepare for the test. The timeline that I made forced me to decide on what information is important to add, such as topics that I had seen many questions on in practice AP tests, and what information is not as important to include.

For my critical thinking DRSL, I thought my book review would be a good example. My book review obviously involves reading a book and then writing an essay on it. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, I decided to go deeper into the meaning of the text rather than just skimming the surface about the easy stuff. This represents critical thinking because I approached my book review in a different way than just writing about non-inferable information, and I tried to understand what the author was trying to convey. Instead of doing the minimum requirements of writing about the setting, the characters, and the dialogue, I spent extra time researching and adding my thoughts about the book to my paper.

My rocket lab report in honors physics is an example of critical thinking because I was required to hypothesize, test, and analyze results of many different tests. I used this information to make a final prediction of the maximum height of the rockets that we launched. This required around two weeks of classes to run all of the experiments. The experiments required numerical iteration, meaning it was often times too "sloppy" to try to solve analytically. This made solving the problems a lot more difficult. The last step was putting all of the pieces together into a final lab report.
