AMES Memory
It was difficult to pick a favorite AMES memory. But one experience that stood out among my four years at AMES definitely came during my sophomore year during health class. In health class, Ms. Aho provided the class with an opportunity to dissect a cow's lungs and heart (because at the time the class was learning about the lungs and heart). Although this experience was bloody and gross, it was still a lot of fun, and it was cool to be able to see the parts of the heart in real life. This made it much easier to understand the location of parts of the heart and how each part functions. I found it fascinating to see how large a cow heart is, which is very large and somewhat heavy. Despite how fun it was to study the heart and look at the various arteries, veins, etc., the most exciting part of this experience was studying the lungs. Similar to the heart, it was mind-shocking to see the size of the lungs. And that was not even the coolest part. The deflated lungs were big, but once an inflation device was connected to the lungs, the lungs were inflated, and they were even bigger. I particularly enjoyed this experience because it was unlike any prior experience I have ever had. The gross aspect of this opportunity put me out of my comfort zone, but in the end, I really enjoyed it and wish that I would have another similar opportunity.
